The Economy:
Colorado has remarkable economic strengths – terrific quality
of life, our airports, attractive cities, and improved transportation
infrastructure. Since the Owens administration, however, Colorado
has lost more corporate headquarters, including Coors and Xcel,
than it has brought in.
- Colorado can overcome its boom-bust history
by building two core industries: alternative energy and
biomedicine. Alternative energy has the bonus of reducing
dependence on oil and gas and Middle East sheiks; biomedicine
will produce healthier Coloradans by reducing the depredations
of chronic disease.
- The Colorado business property tax on equipment
should be eliminated to allow business to bring in the best technology
to operate efficiently, without tax penalty.
- Our renewable and alternative energy initiatives
right here in Jeffco, now small, can grow exponentially to make
this state a leader in a market that will expand through the next
century.
- Colorado must diversify its economy, focusing
on creating a vibrant business environment for entrepreneurs and
a dynamic higher education infrastructure for researchers and
educators.
- Investment in ongoing worker education is critical
to maintaining a competitive work force; Colorado’s community
colleges and vocational and apprentice programs need our full
support.
