Favorite Hike: Shrine Mountain
One
of my favorite places to take out of town visitors is a hike along
picturesque (picture of Paula) Shrine Mountain. This is easy to
find, offers varying degrees of length and difficulty for all levels
and ages.
Take Interstate 70 to Exit 190 and go 2.6 miles south to a paved
parking lot on the left side. The hike begins to the left of the
lot. The drive in down the unpaved but well maintained road is great
fun.
If you lack either time or energy you can walk on an easy trail
for thirty to forty minutes. The flowers are breathtaking and the
elevation gain nominal. The flowers and the meadow vistas are stunning.
If you want more keep going as the altitude gains and the views
get better and better.
Ninety minutes into the hike you will come to a rock formation
that is a great place to take a break, have a snack and enjoy the
views. If you are going for the longer hike be sure to start early
in the day as thunder storms are common and there are many exposed
stretches.
Always even on a short hike bring extra water and a snack. The
elevation even on the short hike is over 11,000 feet and out of
towners and even locals can get dehydrated very quickly. It is also
good to bring a light rain coat as a flash storm can drench you
in a hurry.
If you have a favorite hike or outdoor experience send
it along and we'll be glad to post it.
